It shows a spectrum of Alpha Centaurus superimposed on the background solar (sky) spectrum. This high resolution Lhires III spectral image spans about 130\u00c5 in the \u2018green\u2019 part of the EMS.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/jazzistentialism.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/skyspect1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" size-full wp-image-1730 alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/jazzistentialism.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/skyspect1.png\" alt=\"skyspect1\" width=\"940\" height=\"702\" srcset=\"http:\/\/jazzistentialism.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/skyspect1.png 940w, http:\/\/jazzistentialism.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/skyspect1-300x224.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 940px) 100vw, 940px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As a type G2V star, Alpha Centaurus exhibits the same absorption features as the sun.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Careful inspection shows that the lines in the spectrum of Alpha Centaurus are \u2018shifted\u2019 by a few pixels towards the blue.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/jazzistentialism.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/skyspect2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" size-full wp-image-1731 alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/jazzistentialism.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/skyspect2.png\" alt=\"skyspect2\" width=\"940\" height=\"609\" srcset=\"http:\/\/jazzistentialism.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/skyspect2.png 940w, http:\/\/jazzistentialism.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/skyspect2-300x194.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 940px) 100vw, 940px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is Doppler shift &#8211; a result of the star\u2019s negative radial velocity relative to the Earth (ie, Alpha Centaurus is moving towards us).<\/p>\n<p>Two of the lines on the solar spectrum belong to iron, indicated on the image below at wavelengths of 5371.5 and 5424.1 Angstroms respectively.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/jazzistentialism.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/skyspect3.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" size-full wp-image-1733 alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/jazzistentialism.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/skyspect3.png\" alt=\"skyspect3\" width=\"939\" height=\"170\" srcset=\"http:\/\/jazzistentialism.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/skyspect3.png 939w, http:\/\/jazzistentialism.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/skyspect3-300x54.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 939px) 100vw, 939px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The distance between these two known lines can be measured by zooming in on the image and counting the pixels. Between these two iron lines there are 258 pixels, corresponding to a difference of 52.6 Angstroms.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">5424.1\u00c5 \u2013 5371.5\u00c5 = 52.6\u00c5<\/p>\n<p>Accordingly, the spectral dispersion is:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">52.6 \u00f7 258 = 0.2\u00c5\/pixel<\/p>\n<p>Zooming in and counting pixels again, we see that there are approximately 4 pixels between The 5424.1\u00c5 line in the solar spectrum, and the corresponding blue shifted line in the spectrum of Alpha Centaurus.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/jazzistentialism.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/skyspect4.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" size-full wp-image-1734 alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/jazzistentialism.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/skyspect4.png\" alt=\"skyspect4\" width=\"940\" height=\"625\" srcset=\"http:\/\/jazzistentialism.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/skyspect4.png 940w, http:\/\/jazzistentialism.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/skyspect4-300x199.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 940px) 100vw, 940px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Doppler shift is:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">4 x 0.2 = 0.8\u00c5<\/p>\n<p>Or, as it is a shift towards the blue:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">-4 x 0.2 = -0.8\u00c5<\/p>\n<p>The non-relativistic radial velocity of Alpha Centauri is determined using the formula:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/jazzistentialism.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/skyspect5.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" size-full wp-image-1735 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/jazzistentialism.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/skyspect5.png\" alt=\"skyspect5\" width=\"115\" height=\"73\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>(Velocity equals the speed of light times the shift in wavelength divided by the wavelength.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>v<\/em> = 300,000 x -0.8 \u00f7 5424.1 = -44.2 km\/s<\/p>\n<p>A heliocentric velocity of 20.0 km\/s for alpha Centaurus on the 25<sup>th<\/sup> January was determined using tools is ISIS. Taking this into account we get an actual radial velocity of:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">-44.2 + 20.0 = -24.2 km\/s.<\/p>\n<p><em>The published radial velocity from SIMBAD shows a value of alpha Centaurus is -22.3 km\/s.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The following spectral image was taken during the day on January 25th, 2016.
